Darrell Smith

Lead Peer Recovery Specialist

Darrell Smith, 51, is the Lead Peer Recovery Specialist at Valley Health Associates (VHA), where his personal journey of change inspires others. Born in Baltimore, Maryland, Darrell moved to California at 18 and now resides in Marina. Coming from a large, close-knit family, he maintains a strong bond with his sister and continues to build a relationship with his younger brother. After graduating high school in Baltimore, Darrell served in the U.S. Navy from 1992 to 1996.

Darrell's life took a drastic turn when a personal dispute escalated into a tragic confrontation. In 1995, he was sentenced to 33 years to life, plus life. During his incarceration, he faced immense challenges, including racial segregation and the pain of being away from his family, especially after the passing of his parents.

“I went from the military, where no matter your race or religion you are all brothers, to a place where you always have to watch your back,” said Darrell.

Initially struggling to see a future beyond prison, a pivotal moment helping someone in 2012 made him realize he didn’t want to spend his entire life behind bars. Taking accountability for his past, he committed himself to self-improvement, earning an AA in Paralegal Studies and mentoring fellow inmates. Due to California’s implementation of the Juvenile Youth Offender law, Darrell was granted an early parole hearing and was released in 2021.

Upon release, Darrell rebuilt his life with determination. Within six months, he secured a car, housing, and employment. He eventually joined VHA in 2022 and became the Lead Peer Recovery Specialist in 2023. At VHA, he provides vital support to clients wherever it is needed, assisting with housing, transportation, and life skills. Darrell’s past allows him to connect deeply with those he serves, as they draw inspiration from his story to fuel their own paths to recovery.

“My time in prison taught me how to take accountability, be responsible, and how to be a man,” he said. “I am thankful to God for giving me this second chance.”

Darrell is a dedicated sports fan who enjoys attending Ravens, Lakers, and Orioles games. Passionate about helping others and guiding them toward a better future, he is currently pursuing a BA in Addiction Studies at Grand Canyon University and a Community Healthcare Worker Certification from SFCC, with aspirations to earn a master’s degree. Darrell’s journey stands as a testament that no matter the obstacles, change is always possible.
